Black Rain (Keep On Shinin')

by Vadell Gabriel

/

about

This was produced by DJ Chidow, and it samples Canadian rap group Citizen Kane's underground classic of the same name. This was recorded back in 2020, when I was going through some rough times, pandemic aside, and Chidow already had made the beat after I showed him some Citizen Kane tracks, including "Black Rain". We never released it commercially, though; because we couldn't get clearance from the band.

Recently, I took another listen to the track, and found it was still really relevant to what's been going on in my life the past year, so I decided to release it anyway for free.

lyrics

(Verse 1)
Far from the greatest, not even Halifamous
Feelin down, wrapped in All Blues like Miles Davis
Kickin' dat Doo-Bop, rocking mics like Aesop
spittin' rhymes against a gloomy Halifax backdrop
A broken man on a Hali pier, but I shed no tears
Cuz I wasn't down with Barrett's Privateers
Dreamin' of pies in the sky, chasing fool's gold
Sailed out bold, came back cold hearted and empty handed
Stuck with wounds you can't fix with no bandage
Thought they'd be something, now their goods are damaged
All this comes to mind as I lay back and wonder
If tryin to do rap and radio was a blunder
Trying to catch lighting in the tiniest of bottles
Throttled by doubts, and lack of success
And my trife life at home got me mad vex
Plus you already know about my woes with the opposite sex
Nevertheless, I keep progressing, working on my flow
Thinking about that time I got props from Fresh Wes
The original Maestro, on the phone with me and Robbie G
The type of guy I wanna be, a true MC
The world's going crazy, people screaming 'bout the plague
Shedding more tears than Ryako did at the Hague
But I stay Down To Erf, hip hop's my lifeline
The rain keeps pouring, but I'll continue to shine

(Hook)
I got my bags packed
I got my boots strapped
I got no Cons of Joy, but I got Super Smack
Peace to J-Spade and Blye of Citizen Kane
I'll keep on shining, even through the Black Rain

(Verse 2)
"Music for losers"
What is "Nerdcore" for $200 Trebek
Wack rap by white boys who can't even flow
But I know, and I'll also show, that's far from true
Don't believe me? just ask Mario, I mean SkyBlew
Word to Kadesh Flow, Lady J, Twill Distilled
Mega Ran, and many others who's songs are ill
Where do I fall? I guess I'm okay
Only problem is my ish gets no kind of play
My Sound ain't Electronic, but it sure is Notable
Yet, I'll never have any Hip-Hop Quotables
Then again, the Source has always been a mess
So if I don't make it there, I won't get vex
Ten years in the game, but still treated like a noob
But I got the knack to always make the crowds move
Or soothe ya soul with some mellow madness
Seal of Quality like Nintendo, never any wackness up in here
Rhyme Training on the daily, Keeping my vibe wavy
Keeping the The Unicorn blocked, cuz she knows she can't fade me
Failed college four times in a damn row
Thought I'd be on the streets with nothing for it to show
But now I'm making rhymes for games and cartoons
As I chill on Boogie Down Bantam, making ill tunes
DJ Chidow on the board, keepin me on time
So now I shine, Rain or not, I'm going for mine
